Indulge in the Breathtaking Beauty of Menorca

The beautiful Balearic Island of Menorca which was also called “minor” island by the Romans has spectacular and amazing landmarks and structures that will leave you spellbound. It is not surprising that these monuments date back centuries and still have an awe inspiring beauty.

Menorca is well known for its history and culture. This island has footprints of many dynasties and kingdoms that have invaded this place and have left their impressions. It is for these reasons that tourists come in large numbers to Menorca.

Talking about landmarks and archaeological structures, Placa Esplanada is a place that is worth visiting. It was once used as a military parade ground and now is a popular tourist attraction. The highlights include historic architecture, swings, home made ice creams, various cafes, restaurants and bars.

Castell de Sant Nicolau is a grand castle that was built in the 17th century. It was originally built as a watch tower to protect the harbour situated nearby. But now it is a favourite tourist spot because it provides a breathtaking view of the sea and people can also enjoy the lovely sunset view.

Santa Águeda Castle is another castle of Roman origin. This is the place where The Moors surrendered the island to King Alfonso III.

Cales Coves has numerous historic caves and chambers. It is best viewed from the sea. These caves were once used as burial chambers.

Teatre Principal is the first opera house of Spain. It is 200 years old. Today it is used as a cinema but cultural events and concerts do not take place on a regular basis.

Gobierno Militar or the Military Governer’s House was built in the 18th century. It is one of the most beautiful structures and is a must visit although it can only be viewed from outside.

Another town that is worth visiting is Ciutadella and it’s Town Hall. It served as the palace for an Arab governer and Aragonese. Ciutadella is considered the “Guardian of Traditions”.

Ciutadella Cathedral was built during the reign of King Alfonso III. The Cathedral is built in Gothic style of  the14th century. The Fortress of Isabel II at la Mola is situated at the mouth of the Port of Mahon. It was built between 1850 and 1875 and is one of the best military architectures of those times.

There are several other landmarks that are worth a visit and you must see if you are in Menorca. Naveta dels Tudons, Fort Marlborough, Torre d'en Quart, Bastió de sa Font, Puig de Pollenca, Palau de l'Almudaina, Son Marroig, Royal Carthusian Monastery (Real Cartuja) and Banys Arabs are among them.

These structures describe the history of the island and the times that have gone by. These historic and religious sites make Menorca well worth a visit. This island has gained popularity and is one of the most preferred holiday destinations now and visitors come here in large numbers. It is an ideal place to spend some memorable time.
